Purchase and Payment Questions

What is the Member Referral Program?

Thanks to members who suggested we should do this!  Here is how the member referral program works:

When you suggest to a friend that he/she join Muddy Boots ask your friend to add your name in the referral area on the Sign-Up form.  Both of you will get a $5 coupon that you can use to purchase any items on Aaron’s Sale Table.  Use it like cash.  You will receive your credits before the start of the season.

The Fine Print

  • Only 2017 members will receive credits.
  • The person you refer must be new to Muddy Boots CSA.
  • You must use your credit in the 2017 season.

If I sign up for just the Summer Share, will I be able to sign up for the Fall Share later?

You can sign up now for the first 12 weeks and then sign up later this summer for the fall share.  Often people new to Muddy Boots aren’t sure if it is going to work for them so rather than commit to the whole year, they start with just a summer share.

We will start promoting the fall shares toward the end of July, but if you decide before then that you want to do the fall share you can always order it through the on-line form.

Is there any way to break up the payment into smaller amounts?

YES! We do offer a budget plan that you can learn more about on our pricing page. If you have any questions or special budgeting needs, please call Robin at 496-3567 or email her and we will work something out.

CSA Pick-Up Questions

Is all of the produce washed when we get it?

It depends on the vegetable.  Washed produce will spoil more quickly because of the moisture that is left on it.  And, when it comes time for storage veggies in the fall, it is best that they be stored without any washing.

However, all bagged salad greens are washed as are bunch carrots and beets. This means your kids can snack on baby carrots on your way home from pick-up.

We will provide more storage tips and information on washing veggies as the season unfolds.  If you have any questions about whether you need to wash a specific item, ask when you pick it up.

Why do large shares sometimes get something small shares don’t get?

Sometimes the large shares get more of certain items and sometimes the large shares get items that the small shares do not get.  There are a few reasons for this:

  • Sometimes the farmers only have enough of the item to provide them to the large shares.
  • In other cases, the item may be valued at a price higher than the allowance for the small share.  For example, during one week in 2014, the large shares all received a watermelon.  Because of it’s relatively high value, it wasn’t practical to give the small shares a watermelon or the rest of the share would have seemed skimpy.  State regulations prevent us from cutting fruits and veggies so simply cutting melons in half isn’t the answer.
  • People who get large shares pay 50% more than the price of a small share.

What if I need to pick-up my share before noon?

If necessary, you can use the CSA Hold Form to arrange to pick-up your share at 11am on Wednesday.  You need to submit the form by Tuesday evening.  We are sorry that you can’t pick-up your share earlier than 11am, but in many cases, not all of the veggies will have arrived from the other farms.  Please don’t come early to pick-up unless you have submitted the Hold Form.  Wednesday mornings are like Grand Central Station at Kingsbury Farm.  Trucks from the other farms are coming and going, pallets of veggies are being rolled in and out of the pick-up area and Sam is busy getting the area ready for pick-up.  While it may seem like a minor inconvenience to help someone who comes for pick-up early, in fact it may mean that we are not ready for our noon opening time and that isn’t fair to our members.

Why is there only one pick-up day each week?

Harvesting produce for 170 plus members is an all day chore on Tuesdays and manning the CSA pick-up takes another full day.  Adding more days means that cycle would need to happen again each week and would add to costs which would need to be passed onto members.  If Wednesday is a difficult pick-up day for you, consider using our CSA Hold Service.  This way you could pick-up your share on Thursdays before noon.

What if there is a veggie in the share that I don’t want?

We try to give choices with some of the less popular veggies.  But, if you find yourself with something you don’t want, check out the Trade Box.  We “seed” this box with veggies at the beginning of the day and members can then trade out items they don’t want with something in the box they do want.

Can someone else pick-up my share?

Absolutely and there is no need to let us know when that happens.  Just make sure the person picking up the share knows how pick-up works.  Feel free to forward the person a copy of the Muddy Boots Newsletter – it will always have information on how pick-up works down toward the bottom of the page.

What is the CSA Share Hold Service?

We offer a share holding service if you cannot pick-up your share on Wednesday.  Here is how it works:  Complete our Share Hold Request form.  You will need to complete the form before 5:30pm on pick-up day.  You will receive an email once your share is packed up explaining where it will be in the walk-in cooler.  Please pick up your share by Thursday at noon.

What if I forget to pick up my share?

At 6:30pm on Wednesdays any remaining produce gets packed up for donation to the Community Harvest of Central Vermont. This is the best way we have found to make sure unclaimed food doesn’t go to waste.

We know this can lead to some disappointment if you forget to pick up your share, but we ask all of our members to understand and accept this policy.  Kingsbury Farm is busy and the staff is thin.  Requests to pick-up forgotten shares take time and add costs to servicing the CSA.

We do want everyone to get their shares each week and have several ways to help make sure that happens:

  • Weekly newsletters go out every Tuesday morning to let you know what will be in the week’s share.
  • Reminder emails are sent out on Wednesdays at noon (you must request this service).
  • Text reminders go out at 4pm on Wednesdays (text EZFFQ85352 to 313131 to enroll in this service).
  • Our share hold service is great if you know you will not be able to get your share during pick-up hours.
  • If you aren’t able to pick-up your share, you can always ask a friend or neighbor to get it for you.

What if there is a week where I know I will not be able to pick up my share on Wednesday?

Complete and submit the on-line CSA Hold Form letting us know that we should set aside your share for later pick-up.  Submit the form by 5:30pm on Wednesday and it will be packed up for you to pick-up by noon on Thursday.  Alternatively, you could ask a friend to pick up your share for you.
